Slate & copper roofing · Galway · since 1962

We put the roof between you and the Atlantic.

Third-generation slate specialists for period homes across the west of Ireland. Surveyed honestly, dressed by hand, guaranteed for the weather that is actually coming.

The firm

A slate roof is not fitted.
It is dressed, holed and hung — one stone at a time.

Tom Feeney nailed his first Bangor Blue in 1962. His son John took over the hooks and the ladders in 1989. Today John's daughter Máire runs the scaffold, and the three of them still argue about head laps at Sunday dinner. We are small on purpose: one crew, one job at a time, no subbies on your roof.

Most of our work is within an hour of Galway — terraces in the Claddagh, farmhouses in Connemara, chapels and schoolhouses that have kept their slate for a century and deserve to keep it for another.

The craft

What your roof is,
under the weather.

Scroll through the build-up we hang on every job. Nothing exotic — just the correct assembly, in the correct order, fixed with copper because copper outlives us.

  • Slate, double-lapped. Every slate is covered twice; water never meets a nail hole.
  • Battens & membrane. Treated timber and a breathable felt — the roof sheds water outside and moisture inside.
  • Copper fixings. Nails, straps, valleys and ridge rolls. The cheapest part to skimp on, and the first thing to fail if you do.

What we do

Three dockets. No mysteries.

DOCKET Nº 01

Re-roofing in natural slate

Strip, survey the timbers honestly, re-felt, re-batten, and hang new or reclaimed slate. We photograph everything we find and price the difference before we touch it.

  • New Cupa & Penrhyn, or your own slates reclaimed
  • Copper nails throughout — never galvanised
  • Typical terrace: 3–4 weeks, scaffold to sweep-up

DOCKET Nº 02

Copper, zinc & leadwork

Valleys, ridge rolls, flashings, bay and dormer roofs — folded on the bench, dressed on the roof. Bright for the first year; quietly brown for the next eighty.

  • 0.6 mm copper, standing seam or batten roll
  • Chimney trays & step flashings in Code 4/5 lead
  • Left ready to patinate — no lacquer, ever

DOCKET Nº 03

Repairs & storm response

Slipped slates, failed flashings, a stain spreading on a ceiling. We answer the phone in the weather that caused it, make it safe, then fix it properly.

  • Under 48 hours to make safe, county-wide
  • Matching slates from our reclaim stock
  • Straight word on repair vs. re-roof — in writing

Materials

Slates we trust with your name on the invoice.

Penrhyn

GWYNEDD, WALES · 53.17° N

Heather-blue, 500 million years old, splits like a book. The aristocrat.

Cupa R12

GALICIA, SPAIN · 42.42° N

Dense graphite grey, ruler-flat, honest value. Our working standard.

Bangor Blue

RECLAIMED · c. 1880–1940

The slate half of Ireland grew up under. We buy, grade and rehang them.

Valentia

CO. KERRY, IRELAND · 51.92° N

Green-grey Irish stone for conservation work that must match exactly.

“Feeney reslated our 1840s terrace with the original Bangor Blues. Standing on the street now, you cannot tell where the old roof ends and theirs begins — which is precisely the point.”

— Conservation architect, Salthill (roof Nº 371)
